Mamata Govt to table resolution against ED, CBI in Bengal Assembly: Sources

The West Bengal government is set to bring a resolution in the state Assembly condemning the role of central investigative agencies—the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation—during the upcoming Budget Session, according to sources in the ruling Trinamool Congress.

As per Assembly sources, the Treasury Bench will also table a separate resolution criticising the manner in which the SIR process is being conducted in the state. Both resolutions are expected to be moved during the Budget Session beginning February 3 and concluding on February 9.

The session will include the presentation of a Vote on Account for the financial year 2026–27 on February 5 by the Minister of State for Finance (Independent Charge). Sources said the full budget will be presented later by the new state Cabinet after the Assembly elections. The resolutions are slated to be tabled by the Minister for Agriculture and Parliamentary Affairs, Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay.

According to sources, the proposed resolution on ED and CBI assumes significance in light of recent raids conducted by the ED at the Salt Lake office of I-PAC and at the central Kolkata residence of its co-founder Prateek Jain. During these operations, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had visited the locations along with senior officials and took custody of certain files and electronic documents.

Sources said the issue is currently before the Supreme Court, where both a petition and a counter-petition are under consideration. While the ED has alleged interference in its probe, the Trinamool Congress has claimed that the agency attempted to access sensitive political strategy documents linked to the party, which has been working with I-PAC since 2020.
